Trust, but Verify: What to Demand From Your Carbide Supplier

In a tight, high-priced market, corner-cutting creeps in. Five things every buyer should insist on — and the certificates that prove them.

When raw material is scarce and expensive, shortcuts appear — under-specified grades, inconsistent batches, carbide with no paperwork behind it. As someone who has made tungsten carbide for over thirty years, my advice to every buyer in 2026 is simple: trust your supplier, but verify. Here is exactly what to ask for.

1 — A certificate of the properties that matter

Every batch of a carbide part should be able to tell you, on paper, what it is:

  • Hardness (HRA or HV) — the headline wear-resistance number.
  • Density (g/cm³) — a proxy for correct composition and full sintering; low density hints at porosity or wrong binder content.
  • Cobalt / binder content and grain size — the two levers that define the grade.
  • Transverse rupture strength (TRS) — the material's resistance to breaking.

If a supplier can't give you these for the exact batch you're buying, you don't actually know what you've bought.

2 — Consistency, not just a good sample

Anyone can hit a spec once. What protects your production is low batch-to-batch variation — a grade that behaves the same in June as it did in January, so you can schedule tool changes and trust your process. Ask how consistency is monitored, not just what the headline numbers are.

3 — Microstructure verification

Hardness and density are outcomes; the microstructure is the cause. A metallurgical microscope reveals porosity, eta-phase, grain-size uniformity and binder distribution — the things that decide whether a part performs or fails early. A supplier who inspects microstructure is controlling quality at the root.

4 — Full traceability

When a part does fail, traceability turns a mystery into a fix. Powder lot, pressing, sintering batch, grinding, dispatch — if every stage is documented and recallable, root cause is findable and the problem doesn't repeat. No traceability means every failure is a guess.

5 — The honest conversation

Finally, demand engineering, not just a price. A supplier who asks about your application, duty cycle and failure mode before quoting is one who will get the part right. One who only quotes a number is selling you a commodity — and in a critical part, commodity carbide is the most expensive kind.

Good carbide isn't expensive; bad carbide is. The certificates cost you nothing to demand — and everything to skip.
